OWF(One Word Film) Project

 

One Word Film Project: “Optimistic” by Andres and Kai

For this assignment, we were asked to create a silent short film that was between 60–90 seconds long.  On top of that, we had to show the entire creative process: brainstorming, storyboarding, filming on campus, and editing.

Our Approach

Our assigned word was “Optimistic.” Before we jumped into filming, we discussed what the word meant and how we would express it visually in the video. Me and Kai came up with our own individual ideas and then we compared those ideas to find the best suited ones for the film. By combining those pieces, we were able to create a straightforward storyline that felt true to the theme.

Brainstorming

During brainstorming, we wrote out a rough draft of the shots we wanted to use and some of the notes on a shared sheet. It helped us see how our different perspectives could work together for the film. Here’s a look at part of our brainstorming page:

Storyboarding

The storyboard was one of the most useful steps in the process. It allowed us to pre-visualize how each scene would look, which camera angles would work best, and how the shots would transition into each other. Having this visual plan made filming smoother and kept everyone on the same page.

Editing Resources

For editing, we used Adobe Premiere Pro. We experimented with color correction, transitions, speed adjustments, just to be able to get the pacing just right. These tools helped the film flow naturally from start to finish and gave it a polished feel.

Reflection

Overall, we felt we did well in communicating the message of optimism through visuals and pacing. The storyline came across clearly, and feedback suggested our theme was easy to understand.

If we were to improve, we would focus on two areas:

1. We would focus on the best shots to use because although we had planned it out in the storyboard some of the shots weren't taken as it was more difficult than we expected

2. We would also focus on our time management because during the class where we filmed the shots, we were rushing at the very end so we could have enough time to be able to edit it correctly.

 Me and Kai's Camera shots/Angles quiz submission. 

The instructions of the activity were to choose either one or multiple inanimate objects and to develop a story with those inanimate objects using various types of shots and angles including the following . 

An establishing shot, A Long shot, Two medium shots, Two close-ups, An Extreme close-up, A Point of view shot, Any type of shot using a high angle, Any type of shot using a low angle, Any type of shot with your subject on either the left or right third. Then, we had to create a table to put the order of shots in. Then we take 15 photos using the shots listed above and we must tell a a story through those photos and we must say why we chose that shot for the photos we took.

Me and Kai created a story about a pencil and an eraser(our main characters of the story) that are out walking and simply enjoying themselves and suddenly the eraser falls off a cliff, then the pencil goes down to check on the eraser after the fall to make sure they are okay, the eraser was luckily not seriously injured so they both gaze into the sunset and walk towards it. We took some photos that were good and some that were bad or not in the correct format so we had to redo those. We uploaded the photos onto a power point and while Kai edited all the photos a little bit to make them look slightly better I added all of the descriptions of the photos.

I believe we did well on the project with things like organization and teamwork and planning though I will admit there are things I wish I did better. I wish I could have taken better photos with the special shots and been more creative with the story itself and just added something to spice it up even if by a little bit.
